When my husband, Rob, started his allied health business, I saw firsthand what independence really looked like.
From the outside, people see the freedom and flexibility. The ability to build something that's yours.
What they don't see is that every decision ends up on your shoulders. As the business grew, the clinical work was no longer the only challenge. Every stage of growth brought new responsibilities.
None of that came with a handbook.
I remember our dinner table conversations changing. They weren't as light-hearted anymore. They were about whether the business was ready to hire another clinician, how to keep referrals coming in and how to create more capacity.
With my background in marketing, CRM and customer experience, I gradually became involved in the business. We focused on strengthening referral relationships, improving the client experience and putting better systems in place to reduce admin and support the growing team.
Over 12 months, we brought on 10 clinicians. By investing in our referral relationships, we reached a point where we were no longer chasing referrals. Better systems also gave Rob more time to work on the business instead of constantly working in it.
Since launching Path Connect , a free community for independent allied health clinicians, I've realised our experience wasn't unique. I've spoken with dozens of clinicians and small business owners, and the same themes keep coming up. Most are confident clinically, but they're trying to work out how to build a sustainable business and get their evenings back.
Referrals, hiring, leadership, systems and business growth all become part of the job. Building a sustainable business requires skills that most clinicians aren't taught at university. Some business owners work with coaches or consultants to bridge that gap. But for many independent clinicians and small allied health businesses, that level of support isn't viable, particularly in the early stages.
That's why I created Smart Path.
Smart Path is an eight week business growth program for independent allied health clinicians, launching in August 2026. It's designed to help clinicians build the business skills they weren't taught at university, so they can spend more time building a sustainable business and less time trying to figure everything out on their own.
If this resonates with you, we'd love to welcome you to Path Connect, our free community for independent allied health clinicians. It's a place to connect with peers, learn together and have the conversations that make independent practice feel a little less independent.
